“Where’s The Doctrine”

Can you remember the hamburger commercial that had the old lady who was always asking, “Where’s the beef?”. I think it was Jack in the Box, but I’m not sure. Anyway, have you ever wondered how much of the “church” today resembles the fast-food industry? I say that because I often find myself asking the question, “Where’s the doctrine?” Please, bare with me while I try to make this metaphor work with some sort of clarity. What I’m trying to convey is that the more attractive you try to make the church look to the potential customer, by creating a “value” menu, something that want cost them to much (big bun with a little bit of meat), you run the risk of losing the customers that have given everything that they have for what is inside, the meat.
Meat, in a biblical sense, is the doctrine. Doctrine is the truths taught by Jesus Christ and the Apostles. It is the life blood of the Christian that leads and guides their lives. It is this attempt at shrinking the doctrine, in order to have something on the menu that is cost effective for the spiritually blind and deaf, that leaves the church with no real substance to feed on, just a lot of fluff. Besides, it is the ones that have considered the cost and will give all that they have for the meat, that will get the better “value” in the end.
John 17:17 says, “Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth”. Sanctify means to cleanse from corruption; to purify from sin; to make holy by detaching the affections from the world and its defilements, and exalting them to a supreme love to God, (1828 Webster’s Dictionary). Oh! My brothers, where is the doctrine!

To God be the glory!

  1. yes !!!

it was Wendy’s to be exact brother

and we are too busy with playing worldly church to attend a real one or be involved in a real one

see my post over on http://www.deliveredbygrace.com

on the westboro baptist post, what you said , but without the nice filter – i hear there is a pill for that now , my rudeness i mean !!

laters brother , happy Fathers Day – you have earned it married once, still married and a great Dad to your child , pretty hard feat to accomplish nowadays

  2. Wendy’s! That’s right. Thanks George.

Happy Father’s Day to you too.

  3. Jack-N-The Box? HaHa!!

Anyway, doctrine has fallen to wayside because church is considered a business now(like you stated). Most pastors consider success by numbers, not by the spiritual growth of their flocks. John Macauthur’s video series on pragmatism defines this so clearly. Teaching sound doctrine will not bring people in. Praise God that there are still men like John Piper, R.C. Sproul and others that we can learn from, and hopefully teach others for God’s Glory!!

  4. First of all,I like the blog! Secondly, I must say come on shane Jack In The Box! Ok,enough harassing you. But it was a good analogy of the church today. There is something for everyone on the menu and if you can’t find it at this church, well just keep looking and you will find a church that satisfies your taste buds. Why do people cringe when they hear the “D” word? Let’s go to the final authority, the Word. “In the last days they will not adhere to sound doctrine”. Why? Because we have become lovers of our ownselves instead of lovers of God’s own heart! Gotta go. With love in Christ!

  5. thats it brother cooke

i just wasted an hour writing a post on Josh’s blog

in response to some foolishness , when is should have been studying

  6. looks like i have a new friend in Mae

    great just what i needed

  7. George, do not feel you wasted any time on Josh’s blogspot. People need to hear the Truth! It is amazing as to how far the church has drifted away from true Christianity. Given enough time, gentlemen, we will be regarded like the apostle Paul who stated that we have become the scum of the earth. May God use the words that you have shared on each site to open eyes, open hearts and open ears … that we would be transformed into the image of our Savior and Lord, Christ Jesus.
